The World’s Longest Living Married Couple, an Amazing 88 Years, Bravo!

Meet the World’s Longest Living Married Couple

Karam Chand, 108, and his wife Katari, 101, married 88 incredible years, currently hold the world record for longest married-couplebeing the world’s longest living married couple.  They married in India in 1925 and moved to England in 1965, where they are currently living with their youngest son, Satpal and his wife and two of their four children.

Mr. and Mrs. Chand have 8 children, 27 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Chand says:

“It’s important to have no secrets, and not to argue.  We are so happy together, and it is a dream come true to celebrate another year of marriage.  Being married for all these years is a real blessing.  We are so proud of all of our family and we love celebrating with them all.”

They will celebrate their almost nine decades of marriage surrounded by family and friends.

Mr Chand smokes one cigarette a day before his evening meal and drinks a small measure of whiskey or brandy up to four times a week.  He states that it is important to eat and drink what you want and to cherish each day as it is a “gift”.

His daughter-in-law Rani said it was something he looked forward to.

He also says,

“Eat and drink what you want but in moderation. I have never held back from enjoying my life.”Every day is a gift and we must cherish it.”

Mr Chand is unable to walk any distance without assistance and needs more care than his wife who still has her own teeth and remains active.  Mrs Chand said:

“When you get so old your eyesight and hearing starts to get weaker and you ache more when moving about.  But considering our age and the hard work we have undertaken during our lives, we’re not doing so bad. We know that we are blessed and we are eternally grateful for God giving us this land and our lives, but we will be ready to go when it’s time as we have lived a very good life.”

Their son Paul added:

“They see every day as a blessing and it’s great. We as a family are so proud to have them as parents and we are proud to live so closely with them.  We see it as the most important thing in our lives to look after them, and they don’t feel their age because they have no stress in their lives.  Many people may live this long but not have the benefit of lots of family, and may be moved into nursing home.  It’s so nice for them to be around their family and treat every day as a celebration.  There’s not much wrong with them, but there won’t be many people who can tell you what it feels like to be 108.
“If you have been given the privilege to look after your parents you must involve them fully in family life and never get angry with them, keep them happy and they will then look forward to getting up the next morning.”

Mr. and Mrs. Chand say that the secret of a happy and long marriage is really simple:  it is to give and take. They have never argued and always have respected each other’s opinion.
There are no special tips on how they stay in such a great health. They have always eaten good wholesome and natural food.  There’s nothing artificial in their diet but things like ghee (clarified butter), milk and fresh yogurt are what they like.

“We know that being married for 86 years is a blessing, but equally we will be ready to go when it’s time, it’s all up to the will of God, but we really have lived a good life.”

We wish these two truly amazing people the very best of everything and thank them for such inspiration.

  1. Oh wow. That’s amazing. I’m well into my thirties and unmarried so I guess I have little hope of doing something similar, but with healthy living, recent advances in science and – most importantly – picking the right partner, who knows? 😉

  2. What a beautiful testimony to real, lifelong love and devotion – and God’s grace. My parents shared this kind of relationship, but they unfortunately were struck down by cancer that ended their lives much too soon (Dad at 69 back in 2002 and Mom at 82 back in 2011).

    • I’m very sorry to hear about your parents, but happy to hear that they shared this kind of relationship. Mine did too and they were together for 54 years before my father passed away. Yes, this is a beautiful story and I’m glad you came by to share it with me. Thank you for your comment. Peace

  3. What a terrific article! Where do you come up with these? I especially loved when they said “It’s important to have no secrets, and not to argue.”
That is key to a happy marriage. To respect each other’s opinion!
Thanks for sharing this great story with us.

    • Thanks for your comment, Carolyn. You’re lucky to have such parents to show you such a fine example. Mine were together for 54 years, before my father pass away. Even that is a long time. 🙂 Peace to you and your husband.

    • It is inspiring, Richard. My parents were together for 54 years before my father died. That was a good long marriage. But 88 years? Wow. That’s rare. Thanks for your comment! Come again!

  4. I like this ,I am just half way 44 years married ,
I think happiness is important and it looks like this are Indian
People which cook their food at home not eating to much fast food.
The best for them is that they are with the Family.
May they have still many years together
Thank you Jeanne for this nice post

    • It is a long time, isn’t it? I cannot imagine being with someone for 88 years. But they truly do seem to love each other and that is the miracle! Thanks for stopping by, Lily. I appreciate you. 😉

    • Yes, I noticed that too, that they have big smiles in every photo. They are obviously a loving and happy couple. Thanks for your comment, Terri, and I wish you and your husband much happiness. Peace.

    • It really is a legacy, isn’t it? You’re right. I can’t imagine being married that long, nor can I even imagine living that long. Phew! lol Thanks for stopping by, Ginger. I appreciate that. Take care.
