Meet Smudge, Baby Moon Bear Given New Lease on Life

Meet Smudge

Baby Moon Bear, From Farm to Freedom

Meet Smudge, a five month old bear cub born in captivity at a Chinese facility where bears are farmed under horrendous conditions for their bile.

The good news is that Smudge was born just a few months before Animals Asia began transforming the facility as part of Peace by Piece.  Smudge is the last bear that will ever be bred in captivity on the site.

Meet Smudge

Peace by Piece / Animals Asia

Peace by Piece is Animals Asia’s new landmark campaign to help rescue and rehabilitate over 130 moon bears in Nanning, China. These bears have been kept in horrendous conditions – many trapped in tiny cages from birth – and farmed for their bile.

Peace by piece is the largest rescue of its kind ever undertaken, where 130 bears will go from farm to freedom.Smudge

Some of the 41 female bears could be pregnant with up to four cubs.

The farmer had bred the bears and extracted their bile for years, but had a change of heart when his daughter convinced him of the horrible cruelty of the trade. Animals Asia is taking over custody and care of the bears, leasing the land and facilities.

This will be the largest rescue of its kind in the world.

Animals Asia is now asking for your help to turn this farm into a home – peace by piece!  Their mission is:

… to create a sanctuary and education center. By uniquely working with the Chinese Government, we will also ensure that this new sanctuary will provide meaningful jobs to the nine existing farm workers. We will retrain them to become skilled bear carers, at this new groundbreaking sanctuary. So, this isn’t just a bear rescue, it’s a landmark initiative to help change the hearts and minds of other farmers in the region.

Because of the size and scale of this rescue, Animals Asia is seeking your support. Your donation will help fund the renovation of the farm as well as the veterinary care these bears urgently need and the equipment and structures needed for their rehabilitation.

Please help provide the peace these bears deserve – and claim your piece of history in the making.

VISIT Peace by Piece / Animals Asia to find out how you can help, view a map of the new sanctuary, and to make a donation.

  2. How could anyone Look into that Sweet Little Face & Still be Cruel or Mean to an Animal! I am Glad that this Little Baby gets a Second Chance and I wish More of these Bears Could get a Second Chance Too! I don’t think people Realize that we are the Only Hope for these Animals & We are the Only Voice they Have! I Pray Everyday that Animals Would be Treated with Kindness, Love, and Respect! Thanks for Caring about Animals as Much as I do and for Raising Much Needed Awareness! Peace & Love! God Bless! Jana

  4. I love that this story not only features a happy ending for an animal cruelty story but that it also shows that people who run facilities like this are not necessarily horrible people who are beyond hope. This farm was turned into a sanctuary because the farmer’s daughter convinced him of the cruelty of the practice. So credit to the daughter who didn’t give up and to her father who made a change and is risking his livelihood to do the right thing.

  10. So happy there are organizations like Animals Asia that focus on rescuing animals in that region. I grew up in Asia and have witnessed a lot of cruelty on animals that are just unacceptable in the US. Rescruing 130 bears is a tremendous effort, I hope they finally meet their budget needs.
