5 Best Dog Chews for Dogs That Love to Chomp

Everyone knows dogs are great. They’re adorable fluffs that will offer you unconditional love and devotion if you pet them, feed them, and scratch their tummies now and then. But every canine parent knows that dogs can get a little restless. Some of them can probably chew through drywall if you leave them alone for too long.

Now, listen. We all love dogs, but we hate it when they take all that pent-up energy out on our patent leather shoes and nice couches. The antidote for all that chomping is a good, long-lasting edible chew. A lot of chews are great for your dog’s health and don’t have the extra calories many dog treats have. (There’s no shame in a slightly chunky doggo, but you don’t want ’em to get so big they can’t run around anymore!)

Here’s a quick list of long-lasting go-to chews that are loved by dogs and dog owners alike.

Our Favorite Dog Chews

1. Cow Hooves

Cow hooves make for great healthy treats for dogs of any size. They last a long time, have a shelf life of about twenty-four months or more, and are great for keeping your dog’s mouth healthy and clean. Some cow hooves are even filled with things like peanut butter or cheese and bacon—an added challenge for intrepid pups. These work so well you might have to pry your dog away to get any puppy time.

2. Braided Bully Sticks

Don’t ask us what bully sticks (a.k.a. puzzle sticks) are made from. All you have to know is that they’re made of beef parts, and they’re incredibly popular on the market. Bully sticks can really stink up a place though, so make sure to get a brand that assures hours of stink-free chewing fun. Braided Bully sticks are especially great for a long-lasting chew.

3. Rubber Chews

These are great for dogs that can chew all the livelong day. Stick to chew toys that are 100 percent rubber for more a more natural option. Some rubber chews, like Kong chews, allow you to insert small treats in the toy—an ideal gift for your doggo! The downside to rubber chews is that some dogs don’t dig the taste or smell of rubber. Try to experiment with what your dog likes and see what happens, or if he’s particularly fond of your sandals, go ahead and buy him a good-quality rubber chew!

4.Rope Chews

Ah, the old faithful. These chews are universally loved, even by the chew-crazy of canines. Most rope chews are made of cotton ropes braided together. The best thing about this type of chew is that they’re kind of like floss for your dog. As your dog chews on them, bits of food, plaque, and bacteria rub off. You can even play a rousing game of tug-of-war with rope chews. Dogs love it when you do that.

5. Dental Chews

Dental chews are great for your dog to chew on, as it will help take care of their teeth and gums. Not only that, they help get rid of doggy breath when it gets a bit too, uh, intense.

Dental chews take care of inflammation and get rid of extra plaque too. The downside, though, is they don’t last as long as, say, cow hooves do, but they’re an excellent once-a-day treat that lasts a decent amount of time.

Quick safety tip:

Whatever you decide to get for your dog, if you’re trying out new chews for the first time, always supervise them for a little bit, just to make sure they’re the right size and type for your pup. Some chews are a little too big for dogs, and the last thing you want is for your chews to cause any issues.

Always remember, safety first, and your dogs are sure to love the chews you choose for them!
