How to Properly Handle Abscesses on a Dog

An abscess on a dog is usually a collection of white blood cells designed to keep an infection localized. Abscesses can be caused by bites, parasites, bacteria, or other reasons. Here are some tips on how to properly handle abscesses on a dog.

Call the Vet

The first thing that you should do is to call your dog’s vet. Veterinarians like those found at South Seattle Veterinary Hospital can tell you if it is safe to treat the dog at home or if they need to be brought to their office for examination. You also need to think about how comfortable you are with doing the treatment at home because you may be sticking your fingers in an open wound filled with pus.

Gather the Supplies

You will need clean lint-free towels to drain the abscess. You will also need some saline solution, alcohol, and topical ointment. Gathering all the supplies first helps you stay organized when you begin the procedure.

Drain the Abscess

The first thing that you need to do is to drain the abscess. Start by placing wet towels soaked in alcohol on the abscess. Then, press down to open it up. Try to get as much of the pus out as you possibly can.

Get the Pus Out

Often, the abscess will have a central core of pus. It is essential that you get as much of this out as possible. You may have to keep applying clean clothes to the area until you have gotten as much out as possible.

Treat with Ointment

Once you have opened the abscess and drained it to the best of your ability, then you need to treat it with the topical ointment recommended by your veterinarian. Unless the vet tells you differently, it is essential to leave the abscess open so that it can continue draining any remaining pus. The veterinarian may ask you to keep putting the ointment on until the area heals. Since abscesses heal from the inside out, do not become alarmed if it seems like it takes a long time for the area to heal completely.

Since an abscess is a pocket of infection, chances are that your vet will recommend that the animal get a treatment of antibiotics. Make sure the dog takes all of his medicine in a timely way. Show your pet how much you love him by taking time to care for him properly.
