How does CBD work in dogs?

Every one of us has an Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which plays a key role to regulate our mood and how we feel about the body every day. ECS has two receptors; CB1 and CB2. The CB2 receiver is designed to work with hemp-type materials, such as CBD. They are mainly found in the immune system and can reduce infections and different types of pain. When your puppy takes CBD regularly, ECS will be enhanced, and you will see many benefits.

Anxiety is a confusing and complicated problem in dogs. You may never know the exact source of anxiety in dogs, especially if a puppy is a retired dog or a rescue dog. Past experiences shape and affect the behavior of your dogs and make him anxious. There are many causes of anxiety spikes in dogs. It depends a lot on your dog. You may know your dog’s triggers and avoid them; for example, go to a quiet place during the New Year to avoid fireworks. However, you cannot always predict what worries your dog friends, which is especially true if your dog is rescued or was traumatized in the past.

CBD oil is a natural substance found in the cannabis plant. For thousands of years, cannabis has been used for various medicinal purposes. One of these therapeutic goals is to relieve anxiety in people and pets, but not for the reason you might expect.

Anxiety affects dogs in various ways. Common symptoms of anxiety in dogs include:

  • Panting
  • Pacing
  • Whimpering
  • Aggression
  • Trembling
  • Loss of appetite
  • Urinating on the floor even though being trained
  • Nervous licking of lips

The good thing is that CBD oil can treat all these signs and provide your dog with the desired relief. If your dog has anxiety, there are many things you can do to calm your pup’s stress.  Here are some of the best tips to relieve the anxiety of your dog. First and foremost, you have to identify the triggers. You can identify the trigger in various ways

  • Is the dog nervous with other dogs?
  • What is the reaction of your dogs toward people wearing certain clothes, such as sunglasses or hats?
  • Is the dog sensitive to noise?

Your dog might worry about a lot of things. Since your dog cannot tell you, it is best to avoid these triggers as much as possible. In case if your pet experience a trigger, always use a calm voice. Avoid anger or screaming, which is especially true if your dog urinates indoors when he is afraid. Work to promote good behavior positively; for example, by giving them good things when they go out to do their work. If your dog has an accident inside, never scold your dog as it will increase his anxiety. It is your responsibility to meet all your dog’s basic needs, so give him the maximum comfort he needs amid the moments of anxiety.

Tips for finding high-quality CBD

You can find CBD for dogs in the form of treats, tinctures, topical creams, and extracts, etc. Here are some tips for you to find high-quality CBD dog treats for anxiety.

  • Find out if it is organic

High-quality CBD is developed biologically using pharmaceutical-grade ethanol for the treatment of plants. This grain alcohol eliminates the toxins safely.

  • Make sure it is processed appropriately

There are no rules governing the manufacture of CBD oil. Therefore, some of the companies that sell it at low prices may use cheap means of extracting it from plants.

  • What is the percentage of THC?

Some companies produce CBD from a high THC plant, which can be toxic to animals. It should contain less than 0.03% THC.

  • Consider the price

Price is a critical factor to determine whether the CBD is of good quality or not. But the high cost is not a guarantee that the product is of high quality. It is vital to search the company website or talk to a distributor, as authorized distributors perform independent laboratory tests and respect their product’s quality.

These things are significant to consider because poor quality CBD may not offer the same benefits, and some may contain poisonous ingredients.

Conclusion

CBD oil differs in its effectiveness, so it is best to start slowly. If you buy a tincture, you can control how much you give your pet and see how it interacts. It is imperative to consider the right dose of CBD oil to ease your dog’s anxiety. The dosage amount depends on the size of the dog and the strength of the product. Most manufacturers will give you one or two small doses a day. The suggested doses are small drops, as in 0.05 mg/lb, which means that if your dog weighs less than 25 pounds, a bottle of 600 mg can last for about two months.

The best way to determine the exact dosage for your pup is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. After giving a dose or two to your dogs, you can expect different results. Some dogs show instant relief. Others may take a few days to show any effects. It is recommended to take notes after each dose to see if there are any changes.

Research in the world of CBD and the endocannabinoid system is still active, and much remains to be learned as new discoveries continue. As for CBD oil for anxiety (and many other benefits), people are excited about the results, believing that it is good to have another tool to add to your toolbox.

    • Yes, I would like to see a large-scale study for this too. I do use calming treats and CBD for my German Shepherd to calm her down and they do work for her. They also help her sleep the whole night. That’s good for me. 🙂
